Monitoring RSS Feeds

By: Sharon Housley
Category: RSS

Measuring and tracking RSS while a fairly simple concept, is really anything but. Unlike websites, RSS have the added caveat of potential syndication, making accurate tracking a challenge to anyone but the extremely tech savvy.

It is not unrealistic for marketers to want to know how many subscribers they have, which items in their feeds attract the most interest, or how many click-throughs are generated as a result of an RSS feed.

There are a number of 3rd party providers who focus on tracking the consumption of RSS feeds. Some solutions are rudimentary but likely sufficient for a small business testing the waters with RSS. Other RSS tracking solutions are more complex and while they can come close to being accurate, with syndication there is no solution that tracks with 100% accuracy.

Techniques Used to track RSS Consumption

Small businesses can view web logs to provide information on how many times a specific file (RSS feed) is requested. The logs and information is rudimentary but will give a basic sense of a feeds success. Many 3rd party tracking options have additional tracking information available.

Hosting

The most common method to track the number of feed accesses or individuals accessing a feed is to use a 3rd party feed host. Companies like FeedBurner essentially track feeds based on accesses. The downside to using a 3rd party like Feedburner, is that the url is a FeedBurner url and any PageRank or popularity associated with the url will benefit the feed host rather than the feed creator. Additionally, no distinction is made between unique views or syndicate feeds.

FeedBurner provides a free no frills service to host RSS feeds and they have been proactive in circumventing user concerns. Recently implementing a service that eases users concerns about migrating from FeedBurner. There is a 3 step process for users interested in migrating from FeedBurner’s free service, implementing a permanent redirect, and url forwarding.

Details can be found at: http://www.burningdoorc.om/feedburner/archives/001251.html

Some publishers, who were concerned about lock-in or wanted to retain control of the domain and feed urls often resist a hosting service. The new program FeedBurner Partner Pro is not free, but allows for users to point to their own domain, retaining complete control of their feeds without sacrificing statistical tracking.

The downside to using a service like FeedBurner is that some filtering applications used on corporate proxy servers block feeds residing on FeedBurner or other free hosts.

Redirects

Companies like SyndicateIQ have more complex tracking solutions that generate unique urls for each subscriber. The tracking benefits to such a customized solution is obvious. Individual user habits can be monitored and any users abusing their access and inappropriately syndicating a feeds content can have their feed turned off. The downside of course is that the success of RSS is in a large part due to the anonymity. Users don’t want their personal habits tracked.

Considering the venture capital interest in these 3rd party hosting services. It is important to note that their value is in the data that they collect. As with any 3rd party service, it goes without saying that publishers should read the privacy policy carefully, be aware of who owns the rights to the collected information, and how that information might be used. It goes without saying that the value in many of the free services currently available lies in their aggregate data.

Uniquely Named Transparent Images

Uniquely named transparent 1×1 graphics can be added to the description field of an RSS feed. Users can use standard web logs to see the number of times the image is viewed and determine the number of times the feed was accessed.

Companies Specializing in Tracking and RSS Metrics

Pheedo – Pheedo creates tools that enable individuals, organizations and corporations to promote, analyze, and optimize their weblogs and content.

FeedBurner – FeedBurner offers a full range of services to help you build awareness, track circulation, and implement revenue-generating programs in your feed(s).

Each individual using RSS needs to make a decision of the extent and importance of the analytics they require. Realizing that any system they employ is not going to be perfect.

RSS Feed Marketing Strategy That Guarantee High Advert Click Through Rate

By: Stephen Kavita
Category: RSS

An integral element of online promotion is through RSS feed marketing. It is important to know that not all RSS feeds are similar. Depending on which one you work with, some display the full content of your post while others just show the heading. There are also other publishers that display the heading and part of the content; this then means that a reader has to visit the website in order to read the rest of the content.

It is imperative to carefully consider which RSS feed marketing strategy will work for your online promotion. By this I mean that you choose which feed characteristic best works for you. Consumers are sensitive hence know how your target audiences prefer content presented to them. Online readers are known to just scan through content thus a feed should be able to draw attention.

Before creating a feed, make sure that the RSS feed marketing strategy you adopt is effective. Know exactly how a feed distributes messages and whether your target audience will understand the message passed. For example, if a feed publication just displays the first paragraph of an article, most readers end up scanning through and going to another post. This will mean that you lose out on potential online leads.

The best RSS feed marketing strategy is where the publication shows the whole article. This will definitely increase the chances of your advertisements getting noticed. The click through rate will also be high as people will click on your advertisement links while reading content on the feed and on when they visit your site. Therefore, it is better an RSS feed with lower number of visitors but displaying full content, than a feed with lots of readers and displaying partial content.

By: Liz Canham
Category: RSS

Whats the best RSS feed for fresh content? Well we’ll get to that after a short explanation as to what an RSS feed actually is.

Users of the internet want and expect to find brand new content when they surf. However, that does not inevitably mean that you forever have to update your sites by hand.

With the growth of RSS technology, you can read a number of websites into your website. When these blogs are updated, those changes will all be reproduced in your site. A great, simple method of uploading new content with little effort.

You’re probably wondering exactly how this technology works and how you can use it, so here are some facts to help you choose the best RSS feed and how to add an RSS feed to your website.

Where do I look for RSS feeds?

You need an RSS feed reader which is an application which lets you receive revisions from other peoples’ internet sites.

Why do I need an RSS feed reader?

An RSS feed reader can read specific blogs to which you have subscribed. When brand new articles are uploaded, the RSS feed reader will supply a list of new content.

That’s the key plus of the best RSS feeds – you save time and effort because the feed detects variations to your specified blogs and you don’t have to.

If you are blogging for profit, you won’t have to write new content for your blog very often. If you have found interesting sites that provide useful information, you can just connect these sites to your own website and you will have fresh content minute by minute.

Choosing your RSS feed reader

First, you need to choose an RSS feed reader which is suitable for your needs.

- FeedDemon – You have to pay a monthly fee for this one but it does have a free trial.

- Pluck – This one is free and offers extra tools which help you search for retrieve and organise your data.

- Newsgator is an add-on to Microsoft Outlook which means that you can organise your news just like email. This is also paid with a free trial.

How do I choose the best RSS feed for my blog?

You decide what sort of information you want to be fed to your website. Normally this would be something related to your own niche topic. There are a number of ways to find feeds, the easiest of which is to go to Google, type in “Google RSS feeds” and you will get a link to Google’s list of feeds. Alternatively there are a couple of RSS directory sites – Sindic8 and Daypop. You can also go direct to a website of your choice or search for appropriate websites using a search engine.

How do I subscribe to an RSS feed?

If you want to choose an individual website for its interesting content and if it has the RSS orange box symbol in the address box, you can click on that which will take you to the subscribe page. Here you have two choices, copy the url (which will contain either xml or rss) and paste it into your RSS feed reader or you can click on the subscribe button.

If you want to feed content direct to your site, you will need to include some code on the page where you want the information to appear.

What is RSS Webmaster?

By: SONAM GOYAL
Category: RSS

What is RSS? RSS stands for more than one thing. Usually, RSS stands for “really simply syndication,” but it can also mean “rich site summary,” or “RDF site summary” — RDF standing for “resource description framework.” That answers the question of what is RSS, but what can it do?

What is RSS in the context of really simple syndication? It is a tool that allows sites to give a quick summary of important links and descriptions in XML format. This essentially allows them to syndicate their content by allowing other blog owners and webmasters to use this summary as part of a list of summaries on a specific topic.

Blogmasters and webmasters collect these various summaries with something called a feed aggregator or a feed reader. Rather than asking “what is RSS?” this tool will ask “where is RSS” — and then find it. An aggregator finds RSS feeds to aggregate from selected large sites – such as Yahoo and MSN – and selected smaller sites, such as hand-picked personal blogs and news sites.

The blogmasters and webmasters then take the script generated from the aggregator and insert it into their blogs. This then creates an RSS feed that automatically pulls news items and blog posts whenever they appear. Whenever the blog or site page is refreshed, it will display the latest items.

This is good for two reasons. If you use your own RSS feed, you can get your content syndicated across the Internet without actually paying to submit dozens of press releases and contact dozens of blog owners and webmasters.

Additionally, using RSS feeds is good if you own a blog and want to add fresh content. This will allow you to constantly put new content links and summaries on your blog without spending the time to hunt around for related information. All you will have to do is select a feed aggregator and select a potential feeds from a list of news sites and authority blogs. Additionally, you will be able to input your own selections, allowing you to create custom feeds.

So what is RSS? RSS is a simple way in which to drive traffic to your blog and to display summaries of other blogs.

The Power of RSS in the Online Publishing World

By: Ben Recknagel
Category: RSS

For end users, this means that RSS delivers the latest news onto their computers, making it possible to stay in touch with the huge amount of information available from all their favorite websites. The subscriber is in full control of setting filters to the content or which categories he wishes to receive. This saves time and there is no need any more for your morning routine of going through all your favorite websites. RSS enables you to get any content you want, whenever you want and how you want it. There is no need to give any personal details in order to subscribe to a RSS feed and therefore, RSS is also 100% SPAM free. If you wish to unsubscribe to the news feed, just hit the delete button in your RSS reader. Done!

Since major Internet Companies, such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are constantly implementing new RSS functionality and RSS tools, Media Companies are more and more open for using RSS. It is a growing source for subscribers, webmasters and publishers. Further, RSS works very much in favor of Online Publishers when it comes to Search Engine Optimization and traffic building. A simple copy and paste code of a sites feed makes it very easy for the webmaster to distribute the content which is a great way of getting incoming links to a website which automatically increases traffic.

Despite the overall advantages of RSS and its growing technical modifications and improvements, RSS has still a long way to go. RSS originally launched in 1999 and gained widespread use in 2005 but Online Publishers did not know how to promote it. Instead, they wanted the end user to go to their website in order to push advertising. The perception towards RSS is now slowly changing and an overall increase in popularity of RSS amongst the online publishing world and end users is on the rise.

10 Accessibility Tips For RSS Feeds

By: Mathew Pawlina
Category: RSS

Creating an RSS feed needs thought. An important consideration to keep in mind is accessibility. Very often in creating the larger picture the small details are missed and the RSS feed does not attain the heights it disserves.

Here are a few tips written by experts on how to maximize the accessibility of your RSS feed.

1. Be sure the document is simple and does not need to be deciphered using a dictionary or style sheet. Ensure that every page is reader friendly and has a structure that includes sub heads and more.

2. Make sure the links are clearly demarcated. Separate individual links by text and spaces.

3. Ensure that links are of relevance and readers can make the connection. Ideally a link should enhance or emphasize a point. No random links should be included.

4. Place links at the top and bottom of each page so that navigation is smooth and easy. Make sure links access content directly each time. And include on each page skip to content links.

5. When images are included ensure that the text explains the images clearly.

6. Distinguish between images tables and columns. Learn all about TH, TD, alternate styling, and SUMMARY attributes.

7. The web page must be usable even in absence of scripts. Think of ways to ensure pages are live at all times and not dependant on Java Script.

8. Think of color blind users and ensure that information is accessible even in absence of color.

9. Validate the document each time and use an external validator too.

10. Keep abreast of new ways of increasing accessibility and apply new trends.

Keep in mind web designing tips and always test the pages using more than one screen reader. Use web accessibility evaluation tools to ensure that the pages meet accessibility guidelines. Keep in mind the basics of web accessibility:

# Pages must be usable by people with disabilities.

# Pages must be user friendly to the young and old.

# Pages should be accessible to people with slow internet connections.

Consult the UAAG at http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/uaag.php . The User Agent Accessibility Guidelines explains how to increase accessibility to web content.

RSS’s main function is efficient content delivery. For a successful RSS feed a fool proof plan must be created after understanding end user needs. Choosing a marketing and publishing tool is important as these help content management and database building and other functions.
