Website Traffic – Where to Find it

By: Liz Canham
Category: Traffic Generation

If you have a website, whether for fun or as a business, you must want traffic, otherwise why bother? No matter how general, that website must fit into a niche, be it toys, electronics or cookery and that niche is relevant to finding your traffic.

1. Good Content

If your website is content-rich and keyword rich (but not overdone), then the search engine spiders will find and list it and you will benefit from search traffic. Original content is best, but if you don’t have time to write your own stuff and you can’t afford PLR articles or to have content written for you, the next best thing is republishing others’ work. Make sure that it is well-written and that you include the resource box.

2. Yahoo and Google Groups

Search Yahoo and Google for Groups that fit within your niche. If your niche is cookery, then search for Groups which are allied to cookery. Join some of the groups and post a few times. Very often advertising is not permitted, but you can usually put your website url in your signature. Don’t spam or you will probably be banned from the Group; post interesting and relevant comments. If you don’t want to start a new thread respond to a previous thread, better still provide a solution to a member’s problem or provide an answer to a question.

3. Blogs

Once again, look for blogs which are related to your market or niche and post some comments. However, you should only post positively; if you’re tempted to be negative – don’t be – just move on to another blog. Blogs do get a lot of traffic, so this is a worthwhile activity but don’t forget to include your url. If that facility isn’t available, don’t bother to post!

4. Forums

Like blogs, the right forums can have a very high throughput of traffic. Try to find related forums which publish the number of members, posts, etc. so that you can tell that they’re well-used. Join and post, putting your url in your signature. Don’t forget – no spamming – only post sensible, relevant questions, answers or comments.

5. Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking sites are all the rage. You can bookmark your favourite page (i.e. your own site, article submission or whatever) and others will see the bookmark. Equally, you can publish comments on others’ bookmarks, but remember that all-important url in your signature.

6. Article Writing

Write your own original articles relating to your niche and publish them at article sites such as EzineArticles.com with your website url in your resource box. Make sure that your work adheres to the author guidelines and that you use correct grammar and spelling. You may want to search the article directory first to find out which sub-topics in your area attract the most readers.

By using the above methods, you will gradually build up the traffic to your website and build your own reputation along the way as an expert in your field.

The Basics – How Funds are Collected

Ecommerce simply refers to the practice of shopping online. From the site owner’s perspective, it entails collecting funds from sales transactions on their website and depositing that money into the bank. In order to collect funds, you need to have a merchant account and a payment gateway (discussed below). Basically, when a person enters their credit card number on a website, the card number and buyer information is sent to a payment gateway. This is done securely. The payment gateway will interface with a payment processor to check availability of funds as well as any other criteria set for accepting transactions. If the funds are available, the payment processor will then deduct the funds. The payment gateway will then report back a successful transaction to the merchant, at which point the merchant’s shopping cart system will respond by displaying a “Thank You” message to the buyer. Funds will sit until the transaction is settled, which means the funds are collected and deposited to your bank account. Until a transaction is settled, the transaction will not post to your bank account and the corresponding debit will not post to the buyer’s credit card account.

Merchant Accounts

A merchant account is a special type of account specifically for online retailers. They are designed to allow non-POS (point of sale) transactions using credit cards, or transactions where you don’t have the person’s credit card in hand. In other words, you don’t have a card swiper. A merchant account is not the same as a bank account. It acts as a go-between between your payment gateway and your bank account, accepting funds from credit cards which are then deposited into your bank.

A merchant account is a relationship based on trust between you and the issuing bank. The bank takes funds from the buyer’s account and deposits into your account. A payment processor takes care of checking for availability of funds and debiting from the credit card account. The bank issuing the merchant account is trusting that you will fulfill your end of the transaction by providing the product or service that the buyer purchased. In case where this does not occur, the buyer can dispute the transaction. This puts the issuing bank on the line because they are then obligated to return the funds to the buyer’s card (a chargeback). Therefore, merchant providers are taking a risk in allowing a merchant to take credit cards under their name.

The organization providing your merchant account will do underwriting on the account when you apply to check your credit. If you have a history of too many chargeback, you may be denied. In fact, too many chargeback can result in you, as a merchant, being put on the Terminated Merchant File (also called The Match File). This is a blacklist which will effectively prevent you from ever receiving a merchant account again.

Payment Gateways

A payment gateway serves as the front end to your merchant account, allowing you to manage funds, transactions, and the like. It also serves as a connection between your website and your merchant account. It takes data submitted via your secure order forms and presents it to your processing bank. The processing bank then approves or declines the transaction and sends its response back to the payment gateway. The payment gateway then turns around and provides this data back to the merchant for appropriate handling of the transaction. A payment gateway, then, does not offer services such as merchant accounts or shopping carts, although some of the larger-known gateways do provide such options as value-added services.

Some of the better known payment gateway services are Authorize.Net, Verisign, 2CheckOut.com, Linkpoint, Paysystems.com, Worldpay.com, and Merchant Commerce. Some of the things to look for in a payment gateway are compliance with CISP, SDP and DISC (security initiatives put out by the major credit card companies), virtual terminal (to be able to accept transactions over the phone by typing in their data rather than only relying on your website), fraud prevention, recurring billing, methods of integration, cost and whether they can accept e-checks or not.

Fraud prevention is a big one because, as stated above, too many fraudulent transactions will result in chargeback which could end up putting you on the Match List and your merchant account closed. Some of the common fraud detection mechanisms are Address Verification (AVS) which compares the customer’s address with that on file with the issuing bank, CVV2 which makes use of the 3-digit security code on the credit card (4-digit on American Express cards).

Most gateways will provide instructions on how to interface with their servers from your web store. Most gateways offer two methods of integration.

Many gateway providers can get you set up with a merchant account at the same time as the gateway. So, in most cases, you do not need to sign up for them separately.

KeywordSpy Tracking Series Part 5: The Power of Suggestion

Never underestimate the power of suggestion. When it comes to PPC and SEO campaigns, good keywords are hard to come by, and when you do happen to come across profitable keywords, it’s hard to tell how long before it becomes less marketable. With monitoring your keywords search engine performance comes also the tasks of keeping your eye open for new or better terms that could also do your campaign good.

When you’re monitoring your campaign’s keywords in the Tracking system, whether for PPC or SEO, your selection of keywords will also let the system provide related terms and phrases with your own set list. You can view this by proceeding directly to the Suggestions tab.

While you are tracking down your keywords’ performance, looking into prospective new keywords is also ideal. The market comes up with new keywords everyday. From new products and technologies to special occasions and events, there are great opportunities that would attract further business to a website. New keywords that appeal to visitors that could also generate high amounts of clicks at possibly lesser costs are worth studying.

When you find yourself stuck with ineffective but expensive keywords, of course, there may be keywords your competitors are already using with far lesser costs per click but still has acceptable click value. The same goes for organic keywords. You can compare these keywords with your own and possibly find more profitable keywords than the costly ones you are advertising on. Simply check out the additional keywords of a competitor or compare your domain with a competitor of your choice and check out their unique keywords.

Always remember that the internet is constantly changing not just with more and more information but business opportunities as well. So if you want to stay in the game, start tracking, be informed, and keep sprucing up your campaign.

KeywordSpy Tracking Series Part 4: Comparing Keywords of 2 Domains

By: Kat Sotto
Category: Site Promotion

On this fourth part of our series on KeywordSpy Tracking, we’ll venture into one of the new feature of the system which is the Comparison Tab.

The Comparison Tab allows you to bring two domain’s keyword list in side by side with each other for an organized and efficient comparison of keyword data. For this you can select any two domains on the competitors tab and hit the “compare” option or you can directly proceed to Comparison tab and select domains from there.

One great benefit of this feature is it speeds up the process of taking keyword list after keyword list of your competitors and sorting out which keywords they have and do not have in comparison to yours. You can immediately tell which keywords their ads are showing for that your campaign is missing out on.

New advertisers come in and out the online advertising field daily. Comparing keywords will also allow you to find out if certain advertisers are also worth studying or after a different market altogether.

If you’re trying out new keywords for a specific type of campaign, keeping a close eye on what your competitor is doing could be good. Whether you’re avoiding using the same keywords or researching for currently profitable keywords working for the other advertiser.

This function can also be useful in terms of organic keywords. As much power PPC advertising has, one should never forget not to rule out SEO process, you could be paying for keywords your competitors are using when you can easily and cost effectively implement them in your SEO campaign.

Twitter Account Suspension And Why It Does Not Work

By: Robert Steel
Category: Spam

Hands up, everyone who has a Twitter Account!
Now, put your hand down again, if you have ever used Twitter to plug your line of work. (Be honest!)
Lastly, put your hand down if you have NOT read all the rules. (Again, be honest.)
Obviously this is a hypothetical scenario but my guess is, if you were to put these questions to a thousand Twitter users, by the time you had finished there would be very few hands remaining. Unfortunately, according to the rules of Twitter, this would mean you had a room full of spammers.
Before we go any further I should state that I did use Twitter until a few days ago when my account was suspended for spamming. I opened it to be greeted with this message;
This account is currently suspended and is being investigated due to strange activity. If we have suspended your account mistakenly, please let us know. See Suspended Accounts for more information.
Assuming this to be an easily fixable error, I looked into it further until I came to this message;
Your account was suspended for cross-posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts, a violation of our terms of service and the Twitter Rules that we take very seriously. Your account will remain suspended for a minimum of one week; you may petition for reinstatement on or after August 17, 2009.
An obvious and blatant spamming tactic on my part, you may think, but the simple truth is; I only ever had one account. As frustrating as this situation may be for me, personally, it is nothing compared to the frustrations of Twitter, itself.
I have to admit that, according to the rules of twitter (which I have now read), I was not whiter than white when using it. In my short time as an account holder I came to the conclusion that most users (the ones that I was interested in following, at least) were tweeting, either from or about their work, personally posting links and pictures on their page that they believed their followers would be interested in. I followed suit believing this to be a good use of twitter as generally speaking, our work is what people would be most interested in. If Stephen Fry, for example, were to talk about the weather or the lovely cup of tea he was drinking (being extra careful not to mention the company who manufactured it) who would be interested? We want to know about his work because that is what is interesting about him. As for the rest of us mortals, because our jobs may not be as interesting to most as Mr. Fry’s, we look for people in a similar line of work to ourselves to banter with and share information. If we are not to discuss what we do, how are we to find these people?
This could prove a difficult area for Twitter to police. Once you have read the rules on spamming, in particular, you realize that, if all of them were to be upheld to the letter, they would have very few users left indeed.
There is talk of Twitter Business, a service that will allow people to advertize what they do without fear of persecution. But will anyone use this as a social network? More likely, people will only use it if they are looking for a specific service. So, a search engine, then, which only allows the advertiser 140 characters to explain what they do in order to sell their wares. This will leave the advertiser with only one real option; to put up links to somewhere else where he can go into more detail about his product or service. The links would, more than likely, be to a website… Which has to beg the question; Why not cut out the middle man and just use a search engine instead?
This is probably the conclusion most people (and most spammers, for that matter) will come to once the hype dies down a little so lets hope that it is not the way Twitter plans to monetize itself or it will probably have a lot of disappointed paying advertisers on its hands.
So, if Twitter Business doesn’t seem likely to be viable in the long term, we are left with, plain old, Twitter; a social network where people are not allowed to publicize what they do for fear of being suspended.
It does go without saying that none of us enjoy receiving spam and that Twitter has to do something to prevent it, lest people will stop using the service. But, if it is to be trusted by its users, it cannot be suspending them for cross posting duplicate tweets across multiple accounts without first checking that these users are actually guilty of the infringement. If they continue to do so then the current suspension policy will ultimately achieve the opposite of its objective.
Though my Twitter account has now been reinstated, I now cannot escape the feeling that trying to rebuild my social network would be, at best, humiliating and at worst, just pointless, knowing, as I do, that Twitter could close it at any moment due to circumstances that are neither my fault nor within my control (if they actually exist in the first place). And so it is for these reasons, I will probably not use my account as much as used to and would certainly not have opened a new one had the original not been reinstated as I (and, I suspect, my erstwhile followers) would have seen this as an admission of guilt.
Much more importantly for Twitter, however; if I were a dyed-in-the-wool spammer, do you think the suspension of one account would offend so badly as to deter me from opening new ones? I would imagine that a real spammer would be back the very day after his first suspension with a virulent vengeance.
In short; the wrongfully convicted may never return whilst the genuine spammers will simply grow two new heads for each one that is severed.

How To Make Millions Online

The Internet is home to information that is accessible anywhere in the world. Anyone with a computer and Internet access can get online and access information, communicate with relatives and friends, and even make money online through Internet marketing. Just what is Internet marketing and how can people make money from it?

What is Internet Marketing?

Internet marketing is a method of making money online. There are no requirements for people to participate in Internet marketing – pretty much anyone with Internet access and a computer can take part in one of the most popular ways of making money online. People do not need a college degree or finish some fancy course in order to make hundreds, thousands, or even millions online. This is what Jeff Paul, an Internet marketing millionaire has been able to do and is teaching people how to do the same.

Who is Jeff Paul?

Jeff Paul is just an average person like everybody else. So what makes him different from everybody else? Well, it is because of the fact that Jeff Paul was able to make millions online and is still doing so. What’s even better is that this online mogul is sharing his knowledge to other individuals just like us so we can also make money on the Internet.

Jeff Paul is not ashamed to say where he came from and what his financial status was before he started making money online. He was broke, heavily in debt with his credit cards, and was living with his family in the basement of his sister in law. He was what everyone would call a loser. Until an idea hit him and he came up with a simple idea of making money online with the help of a book that dates back to 1931.

Jeff Paul later found himself making thousands of dollars that were automatically sent to his checkbook monthly. A year later, he was making hundreds of thousands a month. Jeff Paul was able to pay off all of his debts, provide for his family, and live the life he wanted, right in the comfort of his home. He authored the famous program and infomercial entitled How to Make Money Quick and Easy Sitting at Your Kitchen Table in Your Underwear.

The epitome of a loser now turned into an Internet millionaire, Jeff Paul shares his secrets of making money online. One of these methods is what is called Internet marketing. This method of making money online is relatively easy, as long as one has the right tools and knowledge in order to succeed. Internet marketing is actually a win-win situation – affiliates help providers sell their goods or services, the provider makes income with the sale, the affiliates earn commission, and the consumer gets the product or the service that they need.

With this win-win situation, all that is needed for a person to succeed in Internet marketing just like what Jeff Paul did is the determination and the desire to succeed in making money online.

Jones Adams is a freelance writer and a college student. He writes on different subjects. He has written a couple of articles on Jeff Paul and Internet Marketing.

Cash in on the How To Market

There is almost no limit on the marketability of how-to books. Everyone wants an instruction manual, advice, and encouragement. The natural place they turn for this information is in the form of a how-to book. Therefore, anything you know how to do, anything you’ve ever wanted to learn, or anything that’s teachable at all, can become a how-to ebook.

How-to books for hobbyists are a good place to get started. A hobby how-to ebook could be anything from how-to build a Lava lamp, how-to play Texas Hold’Em, to how-to find fossils. The possibilities are almost endless.

Life itself requires instructions and qualifies as a good how-to book topic. There are numerous subtopics, again the possible topics are almost endless. “How-to ensure your child gets an A in math”, “How-to have a successful garage sale” “How-to organize your home office” these are just a drop in the ocean of possible topics. Any phase of life, way of coping with life, or large or small thing about life can be the subject of a how-to book.

A good example of cashing in on the how-to market is the whole series of “Dummies” books on the market. Plus, there are other similar book series. “The Everything” series, “Idiot’s Guide” series and others are all cashing in on the how-to phenomenon. You could cash in by creating ebooks on any or all the subjects covered in any of these series. They are already proven sellers.

Ebooks, because of their brevity and because they are sold primarily on the Internet can target smaller audiences. You don’t have to write a universal book like “How-to use a computer” . Ebooks can cover more specific territory. This allows you to create your ebook in a specific way for a specific niche readership. Then you can create additional ebooks for different facets of the same subject, and sell each one separately!

Say you’ve decided to write an ebook on fishing. You could create “How-to Catch The Biggest Catfish,” “How-to Choose the Correct rod and Reel,” or “How-to Plan a Successful Deep Sea Fishing Trip.” Almost anything related to the hobby can become a separate ebook depending on how much detail you include. Clearly, “How-to buy a bobber,” probably wouldn’t be a great choice, because you would have to strain to fill up 60 to 100 pages on such a simple topic. Remember the topic you choose needs to be book worthy.

The titles of How-To books do not need to be clever. Be sure the words “How to” are the first part of the title, and the rest should tell exactly what the ebook is about. “How-to Have a Successful Garage Sale”, “How-to Build a Built In Bookshelf”, “How-To Preserve Fall Leaves For Crafting”
Are examples of Simple Titles that tell exactly what the Ebook is all about.

The biggest sticking point most people have when creating an Ebook is finding a topic to write about. How-to subjects are almost limitless. Everyone knows how to do something that other people would be interested in learning about. The How-To book market is a proven successful market in which almost anyone can easily tap into.
